The Beginning of Cup Noodles

The “just add hot water” and “ready in 3 minutes” cup noodles known worldwide originated right here in Ikeda. In the aftermath of World War II, Momofuku Ando encountered considerable challenges. With his credit union in bankruptcy and only a rented home to his name, he found inspiration in the long lines of people waiting for ramen at the postwar black market.

In a modest shed in his backyard, he dedicated himself to developing a ramen that could be enjoyed at home. After a year of tireless research, he launched “Chicken Ramen.” This product quickly became a staple for busy households, making it ideal for the growing number of dual-income families in postwar Japan.

Ando's journey continued when he traveled to America, where he met an innovative fan who introduced him to the idea of Cup Noodles. This person suggested breaking the ramen into pieces, placing it in a paper cup, and enjoying it with a fork. This adaptation made instant ramen accessible and enjoyable for people around the world.

In the museum's exhibition space, you can explore the history of instant noodles through fascinating displays, including Nissin Food packaging from past decades and a replica of Ando’s original research shed. Don't miss the interactive experience where you can create your very own unique Cup Noodles. Who knows what new ideas might unfold before you.
