Domyoji Tenmangu Shrine

Known for its connection to the scholar Sugawara-no-Michizane, this shrine is often visited by those praying for success in academic pursuits.

Hajidera Temple once stood on this land, originally inhabited by Sugawara-no-Michizane's aunt. In 901, after being demoted in the imperial court, Michizane visited the temple to mourn his separation from his aunt. Michizane left behind his beloved ink stone, a mirror, and more. Six of these items are now national treasures. A statue said to have been made by Michizane was enshrined, and the temple was renamed Domyoji. Known for this scholarly connection, the shrine is often visited by those praying for success in academic pursuits. Every February, the orchard's roughly 80 varieties of 800 plum trees bloom, earning the orchard recognition as one of the "100 best Osaka greenery views." The orchard even boasts "Jonari Ume," an unusual kind of plum that blooms all year round. The Hatsu Tenjin Usokae Festival, held annually on January 25th, includes a shrine ritual to ward off misfortune. Many worshippers visit here because the festival is said to allow one to move past the lies of the previous year.
