Enmeiji Temple

Founded in the Heian era, Enmeiji Temple reached its current stature in the Edo era. The Yubae no Kaede or "evening light maple" tree on the grounds is over 1,000 years old, and designated an Osaka Prefecture Natural Monument.

Enmeiji Temple is held to have been founded when the bodhisattva Kobo Daishi visited and enshrined the bodhisattva Jizo. It was later restored in the Edo era by the high priest Jogon, who was born in the area. Tsunayoshi Tokugawa placed trust in Jogon, allowing him to found Reiunji Temple in Edo. Jogon worked to advance Buddhism for his entire life. The temple also holds two nationally-designated Important Cultural Properties (a mandala and a shaka nyorai statue of the Gautama Buddha). Its grounds also hold a maple tree planted by the bodhisattva Kobo Daishi; this Yubae no Kaede maple tree is roughly 1,000 years old, and a designated Osaka Prefectural Natural Monument. Part of its name Yubae or "evening light" is drawn from its beauty against the setting sun. The temple draws numerous worshippers during the autumn foliage season (late October - end of November).
