Although the exact date of the shrine's establishment is unknown, they say the first emperor of Japan prayed for success in his expeditions to the east at this historic shrine.A natural spring was discovered in the year 200 when the Empress Jingu visited this area. They say this magical spring, deified as a holy water source, is the reason why the area is called "Izumi" (spring).They say Toyotomi Hideyoshi carried the pure water of this spring to Osaka castle, where he used it for tea.Izumi-no-kuni General Shrine was built to combine all five Izumi Go-sha shrines when this area became the seat of a regional government in the year 716. The General Shrine's main building, reconstructed by Hideyoshi's son in 1605 and still standing today, is located north of the main shrine building. It has been recognized as a national important cultural property.
