Katano Amatsukami no Yashiro Shrine

The origin of the shrine dates back to 787, when the emperor enshrined his father here, south of the capital. They say this is where the Chinese emperor first learned of the custom of enshrining gods south of the capital. The inner sanctuary of the shrine, an example of Ikken Nagare-zukuri architecture, was repaired in 1238 and 1401. The exterior of the shrine remains an example of Kamakura period style, with Kaeru-mata decorative struts and delicate, beautiful engravings. The inner sanctuary of Hachiman Shrine (Katano Amatsukami's auxiliary shrine) has been designated a national important cultural property alongside that of Katano Amatsukami Shrine itself. The stone steps inside Katano Amatsukami's hall of worship lead to Kifune Shrine, said to been a relic of a 6th century imperial palace.
