The Higashiyama district of Kyoto is home to a number of deeply rooted traditions and a diversity of vibrant cultures. Near Yasaka Shrine, in a tranquil spot screened by the trees of Kodai-ji Zen Temple, sits Kikunoi Honten, which opened its doors in 1912 and for over a century has carried on both the tradition and the innovation of Japanese cuisine. It won the highest-possible three stars in the Michelin Guide Kyoto, and is internationally renowned for both its incredible hospitality and untiring spirit of inquiry into the art of cooking. From its founding to the present day, the establishment has been the favorite of luminaries from around the world. The wellness experience at Kikunoi involves using all five senses to enjoy the top-flight kaiseki meal prepared by its superb kitchen. There is no doubt that quality time at Kikunoi is a full-body experience of Kyoto and its seasons. In addition to menu items prepared with the finest skill from carefully selected seasonal ingredients, the senses are courted by everything from the choice of scroll and floral display in the alcove to the view from the room and the ambience of the gardens.
