A historic shrine listed in the Engishiki, an ancient list of government regulations, Mito Shrine has thrived since the Muromachi period as the home of a god of the marketplace. When the village around the Shrine developed during the Edo period, it began to gather support from the villagers as the home of a god of the earth, and the shrine owned a rather large piece of property. The shrine was rebuilt in 1874 and once again in 1991. On the grounds are two auxiliary shrines, Yasaka Shrine, and Tokoyo Shrine. Yasaka Shrine's inner shrine, built in the architectural style of the mid-Edo period, has been recognized as one of the city's tangible cultural properties.
