The shrine is located in an area that, in the olden days, was called Nishikori. As an important water route from Naniwa (historical Osaka) to the capital in Nara, it transmitted culture from the mainland.
The shrine is located in an area that, in the olden days, was called Nishikori. As an important water route from Naniwa to the capital in Nara, it transmitted culture from the mainland. A famous Heian period dictionary included the name of a village said to have existed here. Settlers from the ancient Korean kingdom of Baekche with a knowledge of Korean textiles and sewing techniques lived in the area, weaving silk and brocade to present to the imperial court. This led the area to be named "Nishiki," meaning brocade. Nishikori's main shrine was built in 1363. Boasting an all-cypress bark thatched roof, lacquer, and vermillion coating; the colorful, magnificent building has been designated a national important cultural property along with its auxiliary shrines.
