Built during the reign of the 10th emperor of Japan, Tsugawa Shrine is one of the five Izumi-no-Kuni Go-sha great shrines. Tsugawa originally drew local worshipers as the home of the local river god, and people prayed at this shrine during times of drought. The main shrine, said to have been rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori, has been designated a national important cultural property. Additionally, the wooden god and goddess statue (built in the Kamakura period) along with the nameplate that hangs on the torii gate facing the Kumano-kaido highway (said to have been written by Emperor Shirakawa) are prefectural designated cultural properties. There's also a mikoshi (portable shrine float) said to have been donated by Yodo-dono, Hideyoshi's concubine and wife.
