Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture
The town where the world's longest-living man lived
Kyotango City is the home of Kimura Jiroemon (who died at the age of 116), the world's oldest man, as recognized by the Guinness World Records. The city is also known as a "city of longevity" due to the high proportion of centenarians per capita, more than three times the national average, and the large number of people living long, healthy lives.
In 2017, we began the epidemiological study "Kyotango Longevity Cohort Study" in collaboration with Kyoto Prefectural School of Medicine and A40 Universities, and have since conducted surveys on health checkups, diet, lifestyle habits, etc. targeting people aged 65 and over in Kyotango City.
Among these, the secrets to longevity are beginning to emerge, such as the fact that many of Kyotango's long-lived people have young vascular ages and distinctive intestinal flora (intestinal bacterial flora).
