The traditional entertainment of Ningyo Joruri Bunraku originated in Osaka in the Edo era. Romance and tragedy between man and woman make a deeper impression when expressed through puppets. The April performance is Yoshitsune Sembonzakura whose main character is Minamoto no Yoshitsune, one of the most famous military commanders in Japan. A new interpretation is added to the historical fact where he was pursued by his brother Minamoto no Yoritomo after the war against the rival Taira clan. It is a masterpiece of Ningyo Joruri describing a story hidden behind the history. The first act starts with the beginning of the story up to the rendezvous and concludes with Yoshitsune escaping from the capital and Taira no Tomomori who plans the revival of the Taira clan. The second act tells the tragic story of the Taira people living in hiding and Shizuka Gozen who heads for Yoshino following Yoshitsune.Economical set tickets are available. Watching both acts is recommended.
