Experience the tea ceremony in Sakai, Osaka, the birthplace of Sen no Rikyu, who laid the foundations for the tea ceremony. The ceremony is ideal for beginners as it's performed while seated (a casual (ryurei) ceremony). Firstly, carefully observe the master carry out the ceremony, then learn about aspects of spiritual preparedness when taking tea, such as the welcoming spirit. While you savor the green tea made right before you with fresh seasonal confections, learn about the technique of the school, such as how to turn the tea cup and how to drink. The center also has an exhibition explaining the history and culture of the tea ceremony and a real tea arbor, to deepen your understanding. Be sure to stop by the ruins of the mansion in which Sen no Rikyu was born on the opposite side.
