A formal ceremony that cleanses participants of impurities and sins they unconsciously accumulate, so that they may go through their daily life refreshed and renewed. This ancient ceremony also functions as a prayer for health, family safety, and prosperity. At Hiraoka Shrine, we pray to our enshrined deity, Amenokoyane-no-Mikoto, and use a variety of methods to purify while praying for sound health and family prosperity.
Methods include verbal exorcisms, offerings of thinly cut hemp paper, burning dolls, praying before the hall of worship, cutting linen and cotton into eights, passing through a grass ring, and more.
