Ishikiri-Tsurugiya Shrine

Ishikiri Tsurugiya Shrine was founded approximately 2700 years ago, when the deities, Umashimade-no-mikoto constructed a shrine housed the spirit of his father, Nigihayahi-no-mikoto in Miyayama on Mt. Ikoma. This shrine is dedicated to two ancestor deities of an ancient powerful family named Mononobe.

The shrine was included in the Engishiki, a compilation of the laws and customs of Japan compiled in 927 the late Heian period, as a shrine approved by the imperial court. Despite the various changes that have taken place since then, the shrine has continued religious rituals without interruption for almost 2700 years. Two ancestor deities of an ancient powerful family are enshrined here. The name of the shrine, "Ishikiri-Tsurugiya," (stone-cutting sword-arrow) refers to the great power of the deities ,which cut through solid rock.Affectionately called "Ishikiri-san" and "the deities of tumors," the deity here is said to heal tumors. Ishikiri-Tsurugiya has also earned national fame for its Ohyakudo-mairi (100 pray), in which worshipers walk back and forth between the "Ohyakudo Ishi" stones and the main shrine.
