Kanda Shrine

Historically known as Kanda Kawara Daimyojin, it is the tutelary shrine for the Kaizuka Jinaimachi area.

Historically known as Kanda Kawara Daimyojin, it is the tutelary shrine for the Kaizuka Jinaimachi area. Built by the townspeople in 1587, the shrine has long been popular with locals. The Jinaimachi area around Gansenji Temple flourished in the late middle ages. The ruins of the moat that once surrounded the whole town give visitors a good idea of what the area was like years ago. The majestic "Taikodai Matsuri" is held every year in July. On the eve of the festival, every house in the area decorates with a votive lantern, and the next day, a procession of drum floats takes place at the main temple. The highlights of the festival are the gigantic floats, each weighing over one ton, topped with red futons forming V-shapes. The seven portable shrine floats parade through the town, accompanied by the cheerful chants of the townspeople. They say this festival is the oldest "taiko-dai" float festivals in the Senshu area.
