Kozenji Temple (Tendai Buddhism)
Kozenji is a renowned temple of Tendai Buddhism.
Founded by the priest Ennin in 852 on the request of Japan's 55th Emperor. Visitors enter through the main gate and pass by a pond and various halls before ascending to the main hall at the top to be greeted by the imposing image of the deity Daizokai Dainichi Nyorai. The Buddhas Yakushi Nyorai and Shaka Nyorai stand at each side, and all three figures are national Important Cultural Properties.The expansive temple grounds are arrayed in traditional Buddhist monastery shichido-garan style, and have drawn worshippers since ancient times.
