Founded by the 10th emperor of Japan, the shrine's deity is Okuninushi-no-Mikoto. There is a group of ancient tomb mounds on the mountain behind the shrine, which is believed to be a home for the gods. Stairs and a pilgrimage route have been built to reach the shrine, which is halfway up the mountain. There are upper and lower halls of worship, both of which are open for prayer. The pilgrimage route from the lower worship hall encircles the main shrine, allowing visitors to worship from afar among the sacred trees and evergreen. The ancient aristocratic Kusunoki clan called the shrine "Shimonosuibun no Yashira" (the lower water shrine) and made donations and oversaw its construction, along with the upper shrine, "Uenosuibun no Yashira" (the upper water shrine).
