Nozato Sumiyoshi Shrine

Nozato Sumiyoshi Shrine is said to have been founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.

Nozato Sumiyoshi Shrine is said to have been founded by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1382. The shrine has an unusual Shinto ritual called "Ichiya Kanyo" or "One Night Kanyo" festival (an intangible prefectural cultural property). Disease epidemics and natural disasters historically plagued this village, so the villagers began an annual ritual of sacrificing girls to the gods. In the seventh year of the tradition, a certain samurai scarified himself in his daughter's place. The next morning, the samurai's body had disappeared. Villagers followed the blood trail and found the corpse of a monkey demon. This story has been passed down orally through the ages. During the February 20th festival, seven girls are chosen, and they are presented to the gods atop seven beautiful alters. With some tools used dating back to 1702, visitors can witness a truly historic Shinto ritual. The remnants of an embankment tracing back to the end of the Meiji period can also be found on the east side of the shrine.
