Ohtsuki Noh Theatre

A traditional noh theater where the all-cypress main stage with hashi-gakari is surrounded by shirasu (an area of white pebbles). On weekdays, there are various rehearsal sessions relating to noh, and there are also classes for beginners.

Ohtsuki Noh Theatre, located near Osaka Castle, dates back to before the war. It was established in 1935 as an unusual noh theater that used chairs instead of the gallery seats that were predominant at the time. It is one of the few noh theaters in Kansai that survived the catastrophe of wartime, and it continued to hold noh performances after the war. Characteristics include using a life-size copy of the largest wall stone of Osaka Castle as the background of hashi-gakari (roofed passageway connecting the main stage to the backstage), and setting the reverberation time at 1 second to accommodate the qualities of music of noh. It has 502 seats . The theater conducts various events and schemes throughout the year such as parent-child appreciation class, citizen participatory performance, and setting back of the time of regular performances as a part of the 70th anniversary commemorative project. It has also established an explanation corner and experience class of actual performances. Noh, which flourished back in the Muromachi Period, is said to be the oldest existing art of stage performance in the world, and is a Japanese traditional art that has been declared UNESCO's intangible cultural asset. Ohtsuki Noh Theatre makes efforts to spread the charm of noh by presenting not only traditional pieces but also newly-written noh plays.
