It is a festival in which we give thanks to the deity Tenjin (the deification of ancient scholar Sugawara-no-Michizane) for divine protection throughout the year.

The Tenjin shrine festival is held on the 25th of every month.
The January 25th festival is known as Hatsu (first) Tenjin, and the festival on December 25th is known as Shimai (closing) Tenjin. It is a festival in which we give thanks to the deity Tenjin (the deification of ancient scholar Sugawara-no-Michizane) for divine protection throughout the year.

    Burning of the Ema Prayer Boards
    On the grounds of the shrine, we use a sacred fire to burn the approximately 50,000 ema prayer boards written in the past year.
    Mochi Tsuki (Mochi Pounding)
    As a part of our New Year's Day festival on New Year's morning, Shinto priests and shrine maidens pound new grains harvested from the green fields of the Osaka Temmangu Holy Offering Field to make mochi, a traditional New Year's food. Then, freshly prepared mochi is given out to the worshippers present.
