Temma Tenjin Hanjo Tei is a permanent rakugo theater located in the north part of the precincts of Osaka Temmangu Shrine, which is famous for its Tenjin Festival. Once there were eight rakugo theaters in the vicinity of the shrine, but after World War II, they all closed down one after another. Subsequently the Kamigata Rakugo Kyoukai (association of rakugo storytellers in Osaka) and people of local shopping streets began a fundraising campaign to collect money needed to construct a rakugo theater in the area again, with the purpose of passing down and developing the traditional performing art and culture, as well as revitalizing local areas. Funded by donations from citizens, the Osaka Temma Tenjin Hanjo Tei was officially opened on September 15, 2006, 60 years after the closure of the last of the eight rakugo theaters. Every day the theater offers daytime shows from 13:00 to 16:30 and evening shows from 18:30 (or 19:00) to 20:00. In addition to rakugo performances by a wide variety of rakugo storytellers, ranging from veterans to youngsters, the theater offers other performing arts, such as magic shows, manzai (a comic dialogue by two comedians) and daikagura (acrobatic performances). Solo rakugo shows, as well as rakugo shows performed by members of a rakugo school, also attract large audiences. In addition, the theater is scheduled to offer educational, hands-on programs for learning about rakugo for elementary, junior high and high school students.
