This is one of the ferry terminals built in the middle of the Taisho period (1912–1926). Its ferry runs between Minamiokajima 1-chome in Taisho-ku and Minamitsumori 2-chome in Nishinari-ku. This area, close to the mouth of the Kizugawa River, was all but overflowing with cargo ships coming to and from the coast of Northern Japan in the Edo period (1603–1868). To ensure safe passage of the ships, the Tokugawa shogunate maintained the water depth. Later on in 1832, a 1.58 km long stone bank was built along the area as a seawall and planted with rows of pine trees, which gives the terminal its name, Senbonmatsu (lit. “Thousand-pines”). There is also mention of the area in the 1855 topographic publication Settsu Meisho Zue, which collected together pictures of and information about famous places in the Settsu Province (modern northern Osaka/southeastern Hyogo). Although the ferry was due to be abolished with the completion of the Senbonmatsu bridge in 1973, it was saved by cries from local residents and is used even today by school and work commuters. Free to ride, the ferry can carry around 45 people or up to 20 with bicycles.
