For most people, “folk museum” evokes dusty exhibits filled with overly-technical explanations, but the Shijonawate City History and Folk Museum takes pains to be a place where children can both learn and enjoy learning. Take the Monoshiri-hakase (Professor Savant) exhibit, for example, where a right answer nets a child a Monoshiri-hakase Membership Card and a present. Exhibits like these show the ingenuity of the staff in finding ways to let children enjoy and become more familiar with history. For presents, there’s a huge selection and variety of stamps that include both images taken with a digital camera and hand-drawn illustrations: By the time a kid’s collected them all, their card will be filled with stamps. The displays at this museum are cleverly constructed, too, so even first-time museum-goers will have lots of enjoy. For example, an excavated item might be displayed together with a papier-mâché model or an illustration so you can understand in a glance how it was used and what role it played in people’s lives.
