Sins and impurities unknowingly accumulated in day to day life over the period of half a year build up as a sort of negativity. This negativity can lead to misfortune and illness, so people pray to god to be cleansed and made pure, body and soul. This particular purification ritual has been performed since time immemorial to bless all participants with sound health. One Shinto tradition involved is "Chi no Wa Kuguri" passage through grass circles.

    "Chi no Wa Kuguri" is one kind of Nagoshi summer purification ritual. Participants walk through a large grass ring and are cleansed, body and soul. It has long been said that Chi no Wa Kuguri wards off misfortune, cleansing participants of illness and sin.
