Called the "Tondo Matsuri," the festival gives thanks for the divine protection received in the previous year and prays for sound health, family safety, and fire prevention in the new year. Four parishioners are chosen as torchbearers. They receive the holy flame from shrine priests. The gigantic, 15-meter-tall, conical tondo turret made of bamboo and straw contains New Year's decorations and lucky charms from the past year. As people from all around sing workman's songs, the turret is lit on fire from the inside. At first, smoke silently rises up into the air, until the whole turret suddenly bursts into flames with a thunderous roar. The festival reaches its peak when the shrine priests casts Hitaki-gushi stakes inscribed with worshipers' wishes into white hot, flaming column. As the fire subsides, the Himorogi (made using a whole pine tree) at the center of the turret is thrown in the lucky direction for the new year. It's customary to cook mochi and rice porridge over the embers for sound health in the new year. Finally, visitors leave with sacred mochi in hand, the wild festival draws to a close, and another day begins.
