Osaka Castle and Umeda Course

The center of Osaka is home to two huge landmarks, both old and new, Osaka Castle and Umeda Sky Building, making it a popular area both within Japan and overseas.
Both buildings are equipped with wheelchair-accessible elevators to the observation areas.

Between the two buildings is Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street, the longest shopping street in Japan, and the Osaka Living Museum, where you can experience Osaka's lifestyle from the past to the present.
We will introduce facilities where you can experience the scenery and lifestyle of Osaka from various eras and perspectives.

START Kansai International Airport

Kansai International Airport

From Kansai International Airport, there are three transportation options to central Osaka: train, limousine bus, and taxi.
Travel by train is barrier-free. Limousine buses have stairs at the entrance.

Boarding: Kansai Airport Station (JR West)

To get from Kansai Airport Station to Osaka Castle, we recommend going via Osaka Station. If you use the JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service, you can get to Osaka Station smoothly with fewer transfers.

Boarding Information: There is only one platform on the JR side. Once you enter through the ticket gate, there is an elevator to the platform at the back of the stairs. The train you will need to take is the Kansai Airport Rapid Service bound for Kyobashi, get off at Osaka Castle.
*When getting on and off, there will be a gap or step of about 10cm.

Transfer: Osaka Station (JR West)

Osaka Station is a terminal station where you can transfer to the circular line, which is convenient for traveling around central Osaka.

Transfer information: Get off at platforms 9 and 10, or get off at platform 2 for the loop line bound for Osakajokoen Station.
Platforms 9 and 10 - Transfer floor: There is an elevator to the connecting bridge on the 3rd floor in the middle of the platform.
Transfer floor to platforms 1 and 2: There is an elevator to platforms 1 and 2 on the bridge side of the connecting bridge.
*The station platform has movable fences, and the structure is such that there are small steps and gaps when boarding.
There is a gap of about 10cm at the exit (JR Osakajokoen Station).

Checking your luggageIf carrying your luggage is a hassle, it is convenient to leave it at Hotels in advance.
There are also several coin lockers located inside and outside the ticket gates at Osaka Station.

Train about 15 minutes

Get off at: Osakajokoen Station (JR West)

Osakajokoen Station is directly connected to Osaka Castle, and in recent years has also become directly connected to the commercial facility JO-TERRACE OSAKA, making it a great place to take a break before your trip.

To go to the exit information ticket gate floor (2F), there is an elevator at the end of the corridor to the right of the stairs.
The ticket gates and exit on the second floor are directly connected by a deck to JO-TERRACE OSAKA, a commercial facility located within Osaka Castle Park.

Walking: Osaka Castle Park (JO-TERRACE OSAKA)

"Nadai Chibo JO-TERRACE OSAKA" is located on the first floor of the facility. Proceed through the corridor that continues from the deck and take the elevator down to the first floor.

When you exit the station on the second floor, you will see a deck on your left that connects to JO-TERRACE OSAKA.

Please proceed straight onto the deck.

If you go halfway up the deck, you will see the elevator entrance.

Take the elevator down to the first floor. From the elevator entrance, turn left and go three stores to find Nadai Chibo JO-TERRACE OSAKA.

Nadai Chibo JO-TERRACE OSAKA

Walking: To the Osaka Castle Park exit

Some bridges and entrances to Osaka Castle Museum have stairs and steep slopes. The Sakuramon Gate, located on the south side of the main tower, is easy to enter and exit, but it does have a slope (about 7 degrees).
You can also get to Sakuramon Gate smoothly by using the park's transportation system, the Road Train/Electric Car. (For more information, click here.)

Follow the signs pointing to the castle tower.

As you head towards the castle tower, you will come across a gate called "Aoyamon." Once you pass through the gate, turn left.

There is a long slope along the way, go over the slope and turn right.

Once you reach the top of the slope, you will see Sakuramon Gate.

Osaka Castle Museum

Osaka Castle Museum is located in the center of the vast Osaka Castle Park. Although it is a reconstructed main tower, it is one of the few in Japan that is completely barrier-free. The route to the main tower is up a paved slope. However, you can also get to the main tower without going up the slope by using the road train or electric car.

Walking: To Tanimachi 4-chome Station

If you leave Osaka Castle from the Otemon Gate to the west, you will come to a main street called "Tanimachi-suji." It is a short distance to the subway station that will take you to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.

Exit the Sakuramon Gate and turn right. Follow the signs for Tanimachi 4-Chome Station.

Proceed through the Otemon Gate, an important cultural property.

Once you pass through the Otemon Gate, you will come to an open road. Turn left and you will see the entrance to the park.

You can see outside the park, so keep going.

When you reach the sidewalk, you will see a crosswalk in front of you, so continue straight ahead.

Once you cross the crosswalk, continue on until you reach the intersection.

Once you reach the main street, you will find the entrance to the subway stairs.
The elevator entrance is in the building three doors down after turning right.

There are elevators to the subway in the north and south buildings of the Osaka Prefectural New Annex.

From Tanimachi 4-Chome Station, travel to Minamimorimachi Station. The ride is two stations long and takes about four minutes.

About 10 minutes by train

Get off at Minamimorimachi Station (Subway Tanimachi Line)

Minamimorimachi Station is the closest station to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. It's also close to the shopping district, so it's easy to find a place to rest.

Disembarking Information If you exit the platform from the north ticket gate at Tanimachi 4-Chome Station and board the nearest car (cars 1 or 2), you can reach the east ticket gate from elevator "I" at the rear of the platform.
The East ticket gate is connected to Osaka Tenmangu Station on the JR Tozai Line. There is an elevator at Exit 7 between the two stations.

Walking to Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine has entrances on the north and south sides. The main gate on the south side is an entrance with no steps or slopes.

Once you get off the elevator, turn left and walk through the shopping street marked "Tenjinbashi 2."

We proceed through the shopping district.

At the intersection with the sign "Tenjinbashi 1," turn left.

If you go down the passage, you will arrive at the Omote Daimon Gate of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

This shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and some of the buildings within the grounds have been preserved in their original form since the 1800s, giving it a sense of history. The impressive main hall is well worth seeing, but we also recommend the stroking cow and sacred water, which are said to bring good fortune.
Another popular item at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is its amulets. They are famous for academic success, but you can also purchase amulets with a variety of benefits, including career advancement, finding a partner, and warding off evil spirits.

Walking: To Bashodo

Bashodo is located north of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine along the shopping street. You can easily get there by following the shopping street.

If you leave Osaka Tenmangu Shrine through the north or east gate, you can return to the shopping street by heading west.

Return to the main road and cross the intersection.

Continue along the shopping street and you will find Bashodo just past the first corner.

Bashodo Tenjinbashi 3-chome store

Bashodo is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded 150 years ago, specializing in warabimochi (strawberry mochi). Using carefully selected natural ingredients, they cook their warabimochi in a direct-fire kettle using traditional methods. Enjoy the soft yet chewy, subtly sweet warabimochi dipped in the finest Tanba black bean kinako (roasted soybean flour).

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street is known as the longest shopping street in Japan. With a variety of shops lined up, its lively atmosphere gives you a sense of Osaka as a commercial city.

Walking: To Minamimorimachi Station

The Osaka Museum of Living Past and Present is located at the northern end of Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street. It is a 1.5km walk. While it is enjoyable to view the cityscape, if you are worried about traveling long distances, please use the subway. The route from Bashodo to Minamimorimachi Station on the subway is as follows.

Go left at the corner you just passed.

At the end of the crosswalk, you will find Exit 6, which leads to the stairs and elevator.

Boarding: Minamimorimachi Station (Sakaisuji Subway Line)

If you are traveling by train, travel from Minamimorimachi Station to Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station. The ride is two stations long and takes about four minutes.

Boarding Information Board from platform 2 (towards Tenjinbashisuji 6-chome).
If you exit from Exit 6, the north ticket gate and the platform are directly connected.
*There is a step of about 10cm when getting on and off the bus.

Get off at: Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station (Sakaisuji Subway Line)

Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station and the Housing Information Center Building, where the Osaka Living Museum is located, are directly connected underground.

Disembarking Information If you exit the platform from the north ticket gate at Minamimorimachi Station and board the nearest car (car 1 or 2), there is an elevator "H" to the ticket gate near the disembarking location.
The north ticket gate is connected to the Housing Information Center Building via an underground link.

Osaka City Housing Museum "Osaka Museum of Living Then and Now"

The Osaka Museum of Living Then and Now is a museum with a focus on housing, covering topics ranging from daily life to urban development. With life-size reproductions of early modern Osaka townhouses and modern cityscapes introduced through mechanical models and videos, you can experience the changes in Osaka's town and lifestyle from the Edo period to the Showa period.

Boarding: Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station (Subway Tanimachi Line)

From Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchome Station, travel to Higashi-Umeda Station. The ride is two stations long and takes about four minutes.

Boarding Information: Board from platform 2 (towards Higashi Umeda and Dainichi). Only the North ticket gate is connected by an elevator.
Take the elevator next to the north ticket gate to the transfer floor, then walk about 150m and take the elevator to the platform again to go down to the platform floor.
*There is a step of about 10cm when getting on and off the bus.

About 10 minutes by train

Get off at: Higashi-Umeda Station (Subway Tanimachi Line)

Please note that Umeda, the center of Osaka, has three subway stations, including Higashi-Umeda, and each station has its own unique route.
You can easily reach the hotel by following the signs from Osaka Station underground. The above-ground transportation options are listed below.

Disembarking Information: There is only one elevator on the platform at Higashi-Umeda Station, located in the middle (near cars 3 and 4).
If you go up to the ticket gate floor, you will arrive at the Nakanishi ticket gate.

Walking to Hotel Granvia Osaka (ground level)

If you go up to ground level from Higashi-Umeda Station's "Exit 1," you will find Osaka Station and Hotel Granvia Osaka located between the buildings. However, there is no direct passage, so you will need to take a detour.

Once you reach ground level, you will find Osaka Station Hotel Granvia Osaka, located between two large buildings. Turn right.

Cross the crosswalk in front of the first street you see, "Hankyu Higashidori Shopping Street."

After crossing the crosswalk, turn left into the passage in front of the Fukoku Life Insurance Building and continue on.

Go straight ahead and cross the crosswalk in front of the Hankyu Men's Building.

At the end of the crosswalk, turn left onto the sidewalk in front of Hankyu Umeda and walk along the building.

If you walk along the passage and cross the crosswalk you will arrive at JR Osaka Station. The entrance to Hotel Granvia Osaka is located near the Central South Exit of JR Osaka Station.

Walking: To Umeda Sky Building

To travel from Osaka Station or Hotel Granvia Osaka, you will need to use the underground passage or take a detour.

After leaving the west exit of the hotel, go down the slope on your right and follow the signs for the Sakurabashi Exit.

Go through the Sakurabashi Exit and you will arrive under the overpass. Turn right and continue along the passage.

Go along the passage under the overpass and you will see Umeda Sky Building. Cross the crosswalk.

Cross the crosswalk.

Once you cross the crosswalk, there is a walkway on your left.

As you go along the passage, you will see the entrance to the underground passage.

Go down the ramp and through the underpass.

There is a ramp at the entrance on the other side, so go up the ramp.

Once you reach the top of the slope, Umeda Sky Building will be located on your right.

Umeda Sky Building - Floating Garden Observatory

Since being selected as one of the "Top 20 Buildings in the World" by the British newspaper "The Times" in 2008, this landmark has attracted attention from overseas as one of the world's most representative buildings. The observation deck, which offers a panoramic view of the city of Osaka at night, is particularly popular.
