Facility information

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

This shrine enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and some of the buildings within the grounds have been preserved in their original form since the 1800s, giving it a sense of history. The impressive main hall is well worth seeing, but we also recommend the stroking cow and sacred water, which are said to bring good fortune.
Another popular item at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is its amulets. They are famous for academic success, but you can also purchase amulets with a variety of benefits, including career advancement, finding a partner, and warding off evil spirits.

Exhibition information

Main shrine

The impressive main hall was rebuilt in 1843 (Tenpo 14). Due to the structure of the building, there are steps, so wheelchair users and other people with mobility difficulties can only worship in the general worship hall. The offering box is located in front of the steps, so you can worship without having to climb any steps. The offering box is 111.5cm high.

Chozuya (purification station)

This is the Chozuya (purification fountain) where you can purify your body and mind before praying. The height to the Chozuya is 70cm. There is a step of about 1cm. The fortune slip holder next to the Chozuya can be tied at a low position.

Awarding center

This is the gift shop where you can get amulets with various benefits, such as career advancement, matchmaking, and warding off evil spirits. There is an incline of about 12 degrees and about 4 degrees to get to the gift shop. The counter where the amulets are lined up is 93cm high. There are two types of writing tables for votive plaques and other writing, one 70cm high and one 105cm high.

Petting a cow

It is said that stroking the cow at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine will bring you good fortune, such as improved intelligence and healing from illness. The cow is about 105cm tall.

Hoshiai Pond (also known as Turtle Pond)

Hoshiai Pond is located on the north side of the temple grounds. There is a bridge over the pond, and legend has it that a man and woman who meet on this bridge will be united by the mysterious power of the stars. The grounds of Hoshiai Pond are sloped and paved with stones, so the footing can be unstable.

Rest area

Visitor rest area, parking lot

There is a rest area for visitors that is free to use, and chairs with backrests are provided. A slope of about 16 degrees has been installed to eliminate steps. There are also benches for resting in the parking lot.
