Abe no Seimei Shrine

This is the legendary birthplace of Abe no Seimei, the onmyoji (exorcist) who has become popular in recent years, and is dedicated to him.

Abe no Seimei Shrine is the birthplace of Abe no Seimei, a popular onmyoji (Japanese fortune teller) who has enjoyed a boom in popularity in recent years. Legend has it that Abe no Seimei was born to Abe no Yasuna, a powerful Abeno clan leader, and a white fox named Kuzunoha. When Kuzunoha's true identity as a white fox was discovered, she wrote a famous poem on a shoji screen: "If you miss me, come and visit me. Izuminaru Shinta no Mori no Urami Kuzunoha." According to the shrine's history, Abe no Seimei Shrine was founded in 1007, two years after Seimei's death. The shrine grounds boast a monument marking Seimei's birthplace, erected during the Bunsei era of the Edo period, as well as the remains of his birth bath. The shrine flourished, but fell into decline at the end of the Edo period. It was rebuilt in 1921 as a branch shrine of Abeno Oji Shrine, located 50 meters south, and the current shrine building was built in 1925. The fortune-telling corner, which has a different theme each day, is also very popular.
