Gantokuji Temple, Shin Buddhism Otani Sect Mt. Komyo

Gantokuji Temple has deep ties to Rennyo, a priest who worked his entire life to spread Buddhism. You can feel the weight of history in its stalwart structures.
Gantokuji Temple is believed to have begun in the late 15th century from a Nembutsu training hall opened in Kadoma by the high priest Rennyo of Honganji Temple. In the latter half of the 16th century, Rennyo's son Jitsugo took charge of the training hall, making it Gantokuji Temple. Its main hall, said to have been rebuilt in 1665, its bell tower, constructed during the early Edo period, and its main gate, constructed in the mid-17th century, are all designated Osaka Prefecture Important Cultural Properties. Similarly, its entry hall, reception hall, shoin (study and lecture hall), and taikoro (drum-tower) are all nationally-registered Tangible Cultural Properties. Its massive, 4,700㎡ grounds are home to massive, intertwining camphor trees that are designated as protected trees by Kadoma City.
