Shinshu Otaniha Komyozan Gantokuji Temple

This temple is associated with Rennyo Shonin, who devoted his life to spreading Buddhism. You can feel the weight of history in the stately building.
Gantokuji Temple is said to have originated as a Nembutsu training center opened in Kadoma by Rennyo, the 8th head priest of Honganji Temple, at the end of the 15th century. In the late 16th century, Rennyo's 10th son, Kenshun Jitsugo, inherited the training center and took on the name Gantokuji Temple. The tiled main hall, said to have been rebuilt in 1665, the gabled bell tower built in the early Edo period, and the mountain gate, built in the mid-17th century, are all designated cultural properties of Osaka Prefecture, while the entrance hall, guest room, study, and drum tower are all registered tangible cultural properties of the country. The 4,700-square-meter grounds are home to a large camphor tree, designated as a preserved tree by Kadoma City.
