An agency that creates coins, as well as orders (decorations), medals of honor and metallic art objects. Within the premises stands the Mint Museum, and around mid April of every year, Cherry Blossom Viewing walk-through of the grounds is held.
In its efforts to modernize Japan, the Meiji government decided the system of currency, which had fallen into chaos during the Meiji Restoration, needed to be completely reorganized. So, in an effort to keep up with other developed nations, the Japan Mint was built in Osaka. The mint, established on April 4th, 1871, began producing currency using Western facilities that were considered revolutionary at the time, effectively introducing modern manufacturing methods to Japan at the beginning of the Meiji era.
