Kanayama Tumulus is a strange and rare sight: Comprised of two overlapping circles, it looks like a calabash gourd, or “hyotan” in Japanese, when seen from above. Among the calabash-shaped tombs discovered in Japan prior to 2000, this one was the largest. Based on the stone coffin and grave offerings found within, it is thought the tumulus was constructed back in the 6th or 7th century. On the north-side mound is a passage grave-style stone chamber where two family stone coffins have been laid to rest. The area around Kanayama Tumulus is a historic site park that’s popular as a place for recreation and relaxation.
