Karakuni Shrine

It began during the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (late 5th century) when Mononobe no Omikami enshrined his ancestral deity, Nigihayahi no Mikoto.
The history of Karakuni Shrine dates back to the reign of Emperor Yuryaku (late 5th century), when Mononobe no Me no Omuraji enshrined his ancestral deity, Nigihayahi no Mikoto. Later, his family member, Mononobe no Karakuni no Muraji, protected Karakuni Shrine, and it came to be called "Karakuni Shrine." During the Muromachi period, Hatakeyama Motokuni, the guardian of Kawachi, donated 200 koku and enshrined the Kasuga deity from Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. Later, during the reign of Oda Nobunaga, the shrine was burned down in a war, and in 1908 (Meiji 41), the nearby Nagano Shrine was also enshrined there. As a result, the three deities enshrined there are Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto, the ancestor of the Mononobe clan, and the Kasuga gods Ameno-Koyane-no-Mikoto and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The long approach to the shrine is covered with trees, and it has been included in the prefecture's "100 Best Green Sites."
