Kawasaki Bridge

A cable-stayed bridge for bicycles and pedestrians only, spanning the Okawa River, connecting Tenma and Amijimacho in Miyakojima Ward.

This cable-stayed bridge for bicycles and pedestrians spans the Okawa River, connecting Tenma in Kita Ward and Amijima-cho in Miyakojima Ward in Osaka City. During the Edo period, a ferry linking Tenma Kawasaki and Bizenjima was located where the bridge was built. Nearby were also Kawasaki Toshogu Shrine, dedicated to Ieyasu, the Kawasaki Okura, built as a rice storehouse for the town magistrate's office, the residence of the magistrate, and the residence of the magistrate's assistant. In 1877, a private bridge was built, charging a toll of 3 rin per person, and it was apparently nicknamed "Zenitori Bridge." This bridge was washed away in a major flood in 1885. The current bridge was erected in 1978 as part of a large-scale bicycle path connecting Nakanoshima Park and Senri Expo Park, and is a two-span continuous cable-stayed bridge with a length of 129.2m and a width of 3m, with cables extending from high towers and girders suspended. It has received an award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for its design, which was designed to minimize vibration as a pedestrian bridge and to blend in with the environment as a bridge in a riverside park. Many people use this bridge because events such as the Mint Sakura Passage in spring and the Tenjin Festival Boat Procession in summer are held nearby.
