Naniwa Bridge (Lion Bridge)

This bridge, which dates back to the Edo period and is affectionately known as "Lion Bridge," is one of Osaka's most iconic bridges. Its gorgeous lighting and wide stone staircase leading down to Nakanoshima Park are beautiful features.

This approximately 190-meter-long bridge spans Sakaisuji, crossing the Tosabori River, Nakanoshima Park, and Dojima River. It's also affectionately known as "Lion Bridge" due to the two stone lion statues at each of the four bases: A and Un. During the Edo period, this wooden bridge spanned Nambabashisuji, located west of Sakaisuji. Its north end was Hinoue-cho, and its south end was Kitahama 1-chome. Approximately 207 meters long and 5.7 meters wide, it was a government bridge under direct control of the shogunate. Because it was a curved bridge, it offered views of the 16 surrounding bridges and distant mountains. Its first-class seats on the bridge made it a popular tourist spot for watching fireworks and enjoying the cool evening breeze. In 1912, when the Sakaisuji Tram Line was extended north from Kitahama to Tenjinbashi 6-chome, it was moved to its current location. The design, which sought to create an urban landscape, is impressive, with gorgeous lighting and a wide stone staircase leading down to Nakanoshima Park in the center. Nearby, there are a number of modern retro buildings, including the Osaka Securities Exchange.
