Osaka Tsuruhashi Market (vicinity of Tsuruhashi Station)
An ichiba (marketplace) with a retro post-war atmosphere. Comprising six marketplaces and shopping streets, this ichiba has approximately 800 shops, including yakiniku (beef barbeque) restaurants, Korean grocery stores and specialized stores selling dry food, daily commodities and fresh fish.
Osaka Tsuruhashi-Ichiba extends over three wards of Tennoji, Higashinari and Ikuno, in an area equivalent to the size of two Hanshin Koshien Stadiums, comprising a total of about 800 shops in six marketplaces and shopping streets. In the vicinity of the Tsuruhashi Station of the JR Loop Line/Kintetsu Railway/Osaka Metro Sennichimae Line, there are many yakiniku restaurants as well as specialty stores such as Korean grocery stores, ethnic garments, and boutiques. This international marketplace is visited by many people from all over the nation. Walk further into the marketplace through maze-like small avenues and you can find specialty stores of all kinds selling dry foods, daily commodities, fruit, etc, and of course the fresh fish wholesale market, where various cooks and chefs from Osaka and Kyoto gather from early in the morning. This ichiba began right after the end of the war, when a black market brought many goods together in the formerly burnt-out ruins. Most of the merchants can date back their business to that time, adding to the already retro atmosphere of this ichiba.
