Located within the Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park in Hanahaku Memorial Park, this is one of Japan's leading comprehensive botanical museums. It was originally used as the Osaka City pavilion at the EXPO '90 International Garden and Greenery Exposition. The name "Sakuya Konohanakan" (Sakuya Konohanakan) was chosen through a public contest at the time, and is said to be derived from an ancient poem from the Kokin Wakashū (Collection of Poems of Ancient and Modern Times): "Nanatsu no tsu sakuya konohana fuyugomori ima harube to sakuya konohana." The museum is divided into the following zones: a flower hall where exhibitions and concerts can be held; an exhibition of tropical rainforest plants such as palms and banyan trees; a tropical flower and tree room reminiscent of the beautiful scenery of Hawaii and Tahiti; a room of cacti and succulents that grow in dry regions such as Africa and North and South America; an alpine plant room found in mountainous areas; a polar plant room displaying plants from the South and North Poles; an outdoor garden; and an exhibition room, where a total of 5,500 species and approximately 15,000 plants are cultivated and exhibited. The exterior is made of approximately 5,000 pieces of glass, reminiscent of water lilies floating on the water. Various events are held each season.
