Sandalwood Bridge

The bridge is also a viewing point for historical buildings such as Nakanoshima Library and Central Public Hall.

This bridge is believed to have been built in the early Edo period to cross the Tosabori River and travel to and from the storehouses in Nakanoshima. Its name comes from the large sandalwood trees that lined the bridge. It remained a wooden bridge until 1885, when it was washed away in a major flood. However, with the construction of the Osaka Library (now Nakanoshima Library) and Osaka City Hall nearby, it was rebuilt in 1914 (and later rebuilt in 1935). The current bridge was rebuilt in 1985, and while preserving the image of the old bridge, the bridge surface and other features were designed to harmonize with the historical buildings in the background, such as Nakanoshima Library and the Central Public Hall. At the foot of the bridge, exhibits include a monument explaining its origins, a Taisho-era main pillar, the nameplate from the previous bridge, and a relief of a Chinese china tree.
