Shimoakasaka Terraced Paddy Fields
Approximately 500 meters from the Chihaya Akasaka Middle School is the ruin of Shimoakasaka Castle, a location known as the battleground of Masanari Kusunoki, and from there one can look down upon the terraced paddy fields of Shimoakasaka. Designated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1999 as one of the Top One Hundred Terraced Paddy Fields of Japan, the area is especially popular among amateur photographers in the fall when a sea of golden rice ears shines in the sun. Terraced paddy fields called tanada, also known as dandanbatake, are terraced farmland on a slope for rice agriculture. In the village of Chihaya Akasaka, there are many terraced paddy fields including the one in Shimoakasaka, providing tranquil scenery in each season throughout the year. There is a produce stand (open on weekends) at the bus stop for the middle school where freshly harvested vegetables are sold.
