Osaka City Museum of Art

This art museum opened in Showa 11 (1936) in a corner of Tennoji Park. Originally the main residence of the Sumitomo family, complete with a garden, it was donated to the City of Osaka for the purpose of building the museum. The museum complex consists of the original main building and a later-added underground exhibition hall, comprising three above-ground floors and two underground floors. The main building’s galleries host special exhibitions and exhibitions of the museum’s collection. The collection exhibitions feature over 8,500 items from the museum’s collection—including Japanese and Chinese paintings, sculptures, and crafts—as well as works on loan from shrines and temples, many of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. In addition, the Tennoji Gallery (formerly the underground exhibition hall) regularly hosts open-call exhibitions organized by various art organizations, and the main building houses an art research institute that conducts practical research in drawing, painting, and sculpture. In recent years, the museum has also been hosting gallery talks led by curators and offering hands-on art instruction from experts for elementary and junior high school students.
