Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum

Located on a corner lot west of Hōzen-ji Temple, this ukiyo-e museum collects and exhibits works centered on actor portraits of popular performers from the Bunka and Bunsei periods in the latter half of the Edo period, such as the 3rd-generation Nakamura Kazuemon and the 7th-generation Kataoka Nizaemon.The museum is a compact, four-story building with each floor measuring approximately 60 square meters; it displays about 30 works selected from its collection.On the fourth floor, tools used in ukiyo-e production are also on display, and at the entrance to the rest area hangs a noren curtain in the style of a kabuki “jōshiki-maku” (standard curtain), featuring the colors black, persimmon, and light green. On the first floor, there is a shop selling ukiyo-e-related goods.While Edo-period ukiyo-e is characterized by idealization and exaggeration, Kansai ukiyo-e is realistic; the detailed depictions of actors alongside large and small props allow visitors to glimpse the daily life and customs of the past. The museum reportedly rotates its special exhibitions roughly every three months.
