Special Exhibition “Water Margin” Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts

"Water Margin," one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, is a novel based on historical events from the Northern Song Dynasty that depicts the rebellion of a group of heroes.
Set during the reign of Emperor Huizong in the 12th century, the story follows 108 heroes led by Song Jiang, who, dissatisfied with the corrupt government, gather at Liangshan Marsh.

*Water Margin* sparked a massive craze in Japan during the Edo period, giving rise to new narratives and artistic expressions through the works of artists such as Kyokutei Bakin, Katsushika Hokusai, and Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Even today, it remains widely beloved across a variety of media, including novels, manga, movies, TV dramas, and video games.

This exhibition introduces Chinese and Japanese art and materials related to *Water Margin*. It also traces how the heroes’ lifestyles and values have been depicted and perceived, exploring the reasons why *Water Margin* continues to captivate people today.
