Hokusetsu History / culture

Imashiro Daio no Mori is a public park that combines Imashirozuka Kofun Park and the Imashirozuka Ancient History Museum. Its symbol, Imashirozuka Kofun, is one of the largest keyhole-shaped tumuli in the Yodo River basin, with the mound alone measuring 181m in length, and including the surrounding double moat, boasting a total length of approximately 350m and a total width of approximately 340m. This tumulus is said to be the tomb of Emperor Keitai (the great-grandfather of Prince Shotoku), built in the first half of the 6th century.

Basic information

Imashirozuka Kofun has been developed as the only historical park in Japan and has been open to the public since April 2011.
The site is large, about the size of two Koshien Stadiums, and visitors are free to enter and walk around the burial mound. Surrounding the burial mound is the Haniwa Ritual Grounds, which are a reproduction of around 190 Haniwa figures, and adjacent to the park is the Imajirozuka Ancient History Museum, creating an atmosphere that feels like you've traveled back in time to ancient times. The Haniwa Ritual Grounds includes an area where over 190 life-size replicas of Haniwa are lined up. These highly realistic replicas recreate scenes from the festivals held at the time for the Emperor. The sight of the orderly rows of Haniwa figures, not just of people but also of horses, birds, houses, swords, shields, and more, is truly impressive.
