Traditional culture of Kawachi: Experience indigo dyeing of Kawachi cotton
During the Edo period, cotton cultivation and production in Kawachi flourished, but after the Yamato River was diverted in 1704, cotton production became even more popular and cotton weaving developed further. However, with the start of the Meiji period, long-fiber cotton and thin threads were imported in large quantities from abroad at low prices, and production of Kawachi cotton came to an end. Efforts are still being made to preserve the patterns used in this traditional culture of Kawachi cotton, and you can experience indigo dyeing using stencils that have been recreated to resemble those patterns.
