Quanzhou History / culture

The Kannon Hall, which underwent a major renovation in the Reiwa era in 2022, is called the "Kugi-nashi-do" (meaning "hall without nails") because it was built without the use of nails. It is an extremely rare opportunity to see all 19 Buddhist statues in one place.

Basic information

Koonji Temple is a Jodo sect temple that was founded in 1655 (Meireki 1). In 1914 (Taisho 3), it merged with the neighboring Kannonji Temple, which had been abandoned, and took over the Kannon Hall and Buddhist statues.
Kannonji Temple was founded by Gyoki in 726 (Jinki 3) and was a large temple with seven halls, but after being destroyed by war in the Middle Ages, all that remains are the Kannon Hall (Kuninashi Hall), which was rebuilt in the Kamakura period, and a group of Buddhist statues from the Heian period that were saved by being thrown into rivers and ponds.
It is extremely rare to be able to worship this many Buddhist statues, which are designated as Important Cultural Properties, all in one hall, and the sight of them all lined up is truly impressive. The National Treasure Kannon Hall, also known as the "Kuginashido" (Kugi-nashido) was built during the Kamakura period without the use of nails, and is one of the oldest wooden structures in Osaka Prefecture.
