Kōonji Temple's 1300th Anniversary Festival of the National Treasure Kuginashido Hall ~A Story Woven Towards the Future~
The Kannon Hall, which underwent major renovations in 2022, is known as the "Nailless Hall" because it was built without using nails. To commemorate its 1300th anniversary, the temple is holding events including an eye-opening ceremony for the statue of Gyoki Bodhisattva and an unveiling of its collection of Buddhist statues. It is a valuable opportunity to experience the story of this ancient temple that has walked hand in hand with the local community.
Basic information
Kōonji Temple is a Jōdo sect temple founded in 1655 (Meireki 1). In 1914 (Taisho 3), it merged with the neighboring Kannonji Temple, which had been abandoned, and inherited the Kannon Hall and the collection of Buddhist statues.
Kannonji Temple was founded in 726 (Shinki 3) by Gyoki and was a large temple complex with seven main halls, but due to warfare in the medieval period, only the Kannon Hall (Kuginashi-do), which was rebuilt in the Kamakura period, and a group of Buddhist statues from the Heian period that were saved by being thrown into rivers and ponds remained.
It is extremely rare to be able to see so many important cultural property Buddhist statues all in one place, and the sight of them lined up is truly awe-inspiring. In addition, the National Treasure Kannon Hall is called "Kuginashi-do" (nailless hall) because it was built without using nails during the Kamakura period, and it is one of the oldest wooden structures in Osaka Prefecture.
