Sugie Noh Theatre (Koufuan)
The oldest Noh stage in the prefecture, bathed in the winds of the four seasons
The oldest existing wooden Noh stage in the prefecture allows visitors to experience Noh while feeling the winds of the four seasons. At the adjacent Kofuan, you can enjoy meals and tea time while watching the stage.
Basic information
Experience Noh on the oldest surviving wooden Noh stage in the prefecture. Kanze school Noh performer Sugie Sakurakuni received the bridge over the Noh stage located within the castle from Naganobu Oka, the last lord of the Kishiwada domain, and built the theater in 1917. It is the oldest surviving private Noh theater in the prefecture. The front garden features a white reed and three pine trees planted in the grounds, and a separate L-shaped viewing area (audience seating) surrounds the stage. As the stage and viewing area are separate buildings, you can feel the seasonal breezes on your skin, and enjoy a glimpse of the atmosphere of the time when Noh was originally performed outdoors.
