Special exhibition of the three Buddha statues, important cultural properties at Kozenji Temple
The three Buddha statues, which were designated as national treasures before the war and are now designated as important cultural properties following the enactment of the Cultural Properties Protection Law, will be open to the public without prior reservations as part of the after-sales campaign.
Basic information
Kozenji Temple is said to have been founded by Jikaku Daishi in 852 at the request of Emperor Montoku.
The three Buddha statues enshrined in the main hall - the principal image, the seated Dainichi Nyorai statue, the seated Shaka Nyorai statue, and the seated Yakushi Nyorai statue - are all made in the late Heian period and are designated as Important Cultural Properties (formerly National Treasures). The principal image in particular is a gigantic statue measuring nearly 3 meters, full of majesty, and is affectionately known locally as the "Cape Great Buddha." All three statues had deteriorated significantly over the years, so repairs were carried out over a period of approximately four years, and were completed in 2024.
