Special exhibition of the national treasure, dry lacquer Thousand-Armed Kannon statue, at Kuzuiji Temple
The Thousand-Armed Kannon statue (National Treasure), the principal image enshrined in the main hall, will be unveiled to the public. It has 1,041 arms, literally meaning "a thousand hands" and "a thousand eyes," making it a masterpiece of Tenpyo sculpture.
Basic information
The principal image, the National Treasure dry lacquer Thousand-Armed Kannon Seated Statue, is the only Tenpyo Buddha in Osaka Prefecture, and had its eyes consecrated by Gyoki at the request of Emperor Shomu in 725 (Jinki 2). With 1,041 hands, it literally has "a thousand hands" and "a thousand eyes," but even for a Thousand-Armed Kannon, a statue with a thousand arms is extremely rare, even nationwide.
