Jigen-in Temple - Unveiling of the Dainichi Nyorai statue
The small Tahoto Pagoda is considered one of the three most famous pagodas in Japan, and this time the principal image of the pagoda, the statue of Dainichi Nyorai, will be open to the public. Only the exterior of the Kondo (Important Cultural Property) will be open to the public.
Basic information
Jigen-in is the oldest temple in Senshu, founded in 673 (Tenmu 2) as a temple at the request of Emperor Tenmu.
Within the temple grounds are the Tahoto Pagoda, a National Treasure, and the Kondo Hall, an Important Cultural Property (formerly a National Treasure). The small Tahoto Pagoda, just over 10 meters tall, was rebuilt in 1271 (Bun'ei 8), and is considered one of Japan's three most famous Tahoto pagodas, alongside Ishiyama-dera Temple and Kongo Sammai-in Temple at Mount Koya.
On this special occasion, the principal image of the Tahoto Pagoda, the statue of Vairocana Buddha [designated as a tangible cultural property by Osaka Prefecture], will be open to the public.
