Shishikutsuji Temple: Special Exhibition of the National Treasure Wooden Seated Yakushi Nyorai Statue
In conjunction with the Osaka Destination Campaign After Campaign to be held from April to June 2026, the National Treasure Seated Yakushi Nyorai statue will be open to the public for two days without prior reservations.
Basic information
This ancient Shingon Buddhist temple was founded by the monk Gyoki at the request of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period, and it is said that during the Heian period, Kobo Daishi performed religious practices in the lion cave on the temple grounds, which gave the temple its name. The entire temple burned down during the Summer Siege of Osaka in 1615 (Keicho 20), but was later restored and remains standing to this day. The wooden seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai is said to have been made by Gyoki, and displays characteristics of the early Heian period, such as being made from a single piece of Kaya wood and the sharp, flowing waves of the folds in its robes, and has been designated a National Treasure.
